Everybody Has A Hungry Heart

Sunday morning, 5:20 am and my alarm goes off. Why? Because someone was able to talk me into playing golf at Mt Barker, teeing off at 7:00. The things I put myself through for charity. If I was a Scottish traditionalist and wore a kilt I could have used all my digits to count the number of good shots I had. Thats right, 11. Of the 18 holes and the 4 hours I was on the golf course I only produced 11 quality shots. To be fair to myself some of those were 200+ drives straight down the fairway (but then i have to chip and those who have played with me know I prefer to putt when I get within 50m of the hole). But really, how hard is it to get a white ball into a hole without hitting water/trees/rocks/poles/bridges/people/all of the previous? I forgot to read andymanx's 'The Tree's and Me' before I played which didnt help. Luckily, though, it was this different scoring system that I hadn't played before and my handicap allowed me to score a few points (I didn't come last - I even beat someone in my group of 4, yay!). So I am sorry to say there is no inspiratioanl story of me playing golf (or any other sport for that matter - but dropping 2 catches in a cricket semi final and only playing c grade football will do that) except that I did hit the longest drive on the 16th (I think it was that hole) that one of my playing group had ever seen on that hole and he plays there a lot so I must be good.

And while on the topic of sport, when did bridge become a sport? The paper a few days ago included bridge in their brief sport rap up at the end of the sport section. Cards are not sport. Neither is fishing, chess, game hunting or soccer.

Sam you ignorant fool, you know as well as anyone that soccer is the world game. Its played here in Chile, whereas Afl and cricket are not.

Sorry to hear about the budgies, and what happened to my suggested names of "Walrus the gentle" etc?

Walrus the Gentle is doing fine, he seems to be a bit of a lady's bird.

And of course no other country plays AFL - there is no other country as great as Australia. Anyone can kick a ball around but it takes a truly great person to play Australian football.

Can I be Walrus the gentle's Godfather?

Anyone with half a brain cell can run around a paddock in a pair of skimpy shorts trying to hoof an egg shaped piece of leather through posts about 20 metres apart. However it takes great skill to play the world game and commands a certain amount of flair and grace in an individual to become a truly great player.

I think you would make a great Godfather for Walrus the Gentle.

"Anyone with half a brain cell can run around a paddock". Thats why soccer players play soccer - they don't even have half a brain cell. They always seem to be rolling around on the ground, clutching their ankles/shins looking for them.

hey sam

im sorry i dissagree with you here. if its in the olympics its a sport, therefore anykind of shooting (i.e. pistol shooting, clay pigeion shooting, archery etc) is a sport along with soccer. Thearley im with you on this one thats why there is a world cup for soccer and it is played at the olympics too and i believe you wen to see the italy vs honduras and are intending to see the world cup in germany next year.

fishing however, i believe that most of the time it is not a sport. however, when they have those competitions where you have to catch the biggest fish then it could be classed as a sport. why because they all require skill. thats what a sport is based around skill.

football as it should be called is the greatest sport of all time.

nothing beats the true round ball game.

Hoogy, dont get me started on why the Olympics actually mean nothing these days and soccer in the Olympics is a joke (along with a number of other "sports"). And I never said anything about shooting, just game hunting - as in you with a highpowered rifle from 50m versus a deer. What a thrill that must be!
If all things requiring skill can be classed as sport, why isnt cooking, sewing, building a boat in a bottle, tying up shoelaces and climbing a tree classed as sports? They all require skill.

As for the true round ball game, I think that title belongs to table tennis.
